Case Study: OZ Minerals & Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation
What: Brokering Solutions
Why:
In 2016, OZ Minerals (OZM) and the Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) engaged in a partnering process to develop a Native Title Mining Agreement around a proposed mine at Carrapateena in northern South Australia.
The intent of the discussions between KAC and OZM were to take partnering beyond just engagement with stakeholders to a deep meaningful and equitable partnering relationship.
How:
We were engaged to independently broker the partnering process and to help develop a strong relationship between the two parties.
The result of over four months of discussions was a Partnering Agreement that will form the basis for a long-term relationship over the next 20 years.
Following the development of a Partnering Agreement the two parties then went on to complete a Native Title Mining Agreement just 12 months from commencement of negotiations.
One of the key success factors for this partnering process to date has been the willingness of the leaders of both parties to be authentic – to be open and honest in their engagement and discussions and to share critical information. This has led to a foundation of trust being built between the two organisations resulting in a faster completion of the agreement-making process.
This case study is an excellent example of how two organisations can come together and create shared value around a major mining development.
