Case Study: Native Title Resolution in South Australia
What: Brokering Solutions
Why:
In early 2000 the SA Farmers’ Federation, the SA Chamber of Mines and Energy, the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement (representing some 34 Native Title Groups) and the SA State Government came together to explore the opportunity to develop Indigenous Land Use Agreements and assist the resolution of native title issues in South Australia.
How:
Ian Dixon was initially engaged to facilitate the early discussions between these parties and to establish the collaborative process, including the initial meeting protocol. This role then developed into Ian becoming the Independent Chair for this Native Title Resolution process from 2000 to 2009. He was also the lead facilitator for numerous Indigenous Land Use Agreements in many parts of South Australia during this period.
In addition, DIXON Partnering Solutions were appointed the independent project managers for this state-wide process and provided additional Deputy Independent Chairs and Facilitators where required.
In addition to the parties above the negotiations were joined by two Fishing Industry Councils (in 2002) and the Local Government Association (in 2003).
The negotiations for these Indigenous Land Use Agreements covered areas such as, mineral exploration, pastoral properties, national parks, fishing, the Murray River and Outback Areas Townships.
